At one install we used WD Red drives in the NAS. Having fast disks in the nas will help with backup times. You could use smb, nfs will give you a slightly faster backup but not much. Additionally support for immutability would help to add another layer of ransomware protection.We will typically setup the connection between veeam and synology nas using a nfs share. For the modern age it would be nice to see more support object storage or cloud storage. Traditional storage targets are well supported, which is fine. With Veeam NAS Backup it is very easy to backup the files from your NAS.

Set up your planned backup schedule, go to the summary screen and finish your backup job creation. Hopefully Veeam will fix this in the future, too. Again here you can’t use object storage as a target. The “Secondary Target” allows you to configure another copy of your data. If you have your SOBR already configured your object storage repository will show up here.

Here is the place to choose your object storage. In the second part (2) you configure the “Archive repository” storage for your files. It will only use the configured primary storage of that SOBR. Take care! When using a SOBR Veeam wont use the configured object storage to tier out data. You can configure a standard backup repository or even a SOBR (see below table for supported configs).

This backup tier stores the data for the first X days (28 days is the default). A Backup repository (1) which is used for the primary backup. Veeam is offering to possible devices here. In this screen we are going to configure our storage devices. Once this step is done we come to the interesting part. But you change this by removing the default config and add your own selection. In the following screen you decide which files and folders you want to backup. After you provided a name and description press “Next”. Once you click finish Veeam asks you to create a new backup job for your NAS. You can easily go to the summary screen and press “Finish”. You need to provide host and name of the share you want to add, plus the required access credentials. In this example I am adding my freenas NAS to the inventory by using the SMB option. In the inventory section look for “File Shares”, click on it and afterwards click “ADD FILE SHARE” in the right part of the screen.ĭepending on your NAS you have 3 options to choose from, when adding it to your inventory. Therefor you open your Veeam Backup and Replication management console and go to the inventory section.
